crossing Silent Creek in Abercrombie River National Park

As we approached the Abercrombie River National Park from the Brass Walls entrance off the Oberon to Goulburn Road, we were greeted by a 30 metre long bog hole with axle deep ruts. Our JK Jeep Wangler with the Track Trailer Eagle in tow made easy progress thanks to the traction control which applies a brake to any wheel that is spinning. Unfortunately Lindsay & Robyn's Patrol with a limited slip diff was not so lucky particularly towing the heavier Pacific Aliminium hybrid camper, but it wasn't long until we had the Patrol hooked up to the rear of our camper with a snatch strap & they were out.

The track became drier as we slowly climbed higher along Middle Fire Trail. This trail follows ridges heading south with some steep ascents & descents encountered, all tackled in low range. After about an hour & having only travelled ten kilometres owing to the track condition, we pulled over for a lunch break. After packing up the kitchen we drove a little more with the track continuing the same. Another hour saw us high on a ridge at the intersection of the Abercrombie Fire Trail overlooking the Abercrombie River far below.

From here we turned west & it was a very steep descent into the Beach camping area on the Abercrombie River. We had a look around & then ventured back up the very steep track & headed for another camping area called the Sink, however Liking Hole Creek was up due to recent rain so we retraced our steps back to the intersection with Middle Fire Trail & drove down another steep track into Silent Creek camping area.

After a pleasant few days at the Silent Creek camp exploring the surrounds, we crawled our way back up the steep track to the Middle Fire Trail. The twenty kilometres from the campsite took two hours all in low range. Letting our tyres down helped with traction as well as a bit of comfort over the eroded track surface.

A couple of the trails had signs saying no trailers, so we heeded the advice & kept to the main trail.
